The CONNECT CASTLEGAR community action group has been nominated for a PRIDE OF PLACE Award 2010, which is a nationwide competition for communities and their efforts. The judges will arrive shortly, and the Awards will be announced at a ceremony in Dublin in November hosted by the President.
So congrats Castlegar!
Galway City Council can nominate five groups as candidates, and CONNECT CASTLEGAR received their nomination in the Community Arts Initiative category, for the very successful BOREEN FESTIVAL held last October. The organisers are busy planning the next Boreen Festival, so any bright ideas are welcome, by mailing the email address
The group has also been busy submitting a detailed response to the Galway City Draft Development Plan. One of the great ideas in the document is "the Castlegar Way”, which identifies green roads and boreens that could and should be maintained and upgraded, allowing a walking track around Castlegar for the use of the community.
This could have an enormous amenity benefit to the area, as well as attracting tourists. Walking is one of the growth areas, bringing in half a million visitors to this country, and it’s free! So one of CONNECT CASTLEGAR’s missions is to bring in walkability. It’s a great way to appreciate the natural beauty of Castlegar, with its limestone and lakes, Castles and cottages.
Let’s talk, and let’s walk!
