There were a number of Lime Kilns in Castlegar Galway.

This Region is invariably Limestone anyway, but Lime had other less obvious functions.

  • White Wash - the primitive Paint
  • For adding to the Soil.

Basically, Limestone based Stones , were Cooked - burned, until the Fire changed the structure of the Rock on a Chemical level.

As Whitewash Paint, it was put on Houses (inside and out) and in Sheds - adding some Microbial protection as well.
